On April 6, 1909, American explorer Robert Peary along with Matthew Henson accomplished their most awaited dream. Robert Peary and Mathew Henson along with four Eskimos reached the North Pole.

The American Navy civil engineer Robert Peary made several preparatory expeditions upto Greenland and Alaska, since 1886. Finally in April 1909, he along with Matthew Henson who was the most trusted member of the expedition reached across the 90 degrees latitude.

Though his expedition led to a few controversies, the North Pole expedition is considered to be one of the greatest achievements of the modern era. Robert Peary and Matthew Henson became the first men to reach North Pole without the benefit of sophisticated technology.

To commemorate this achievement, USPS issued a commemorative stamp worth 22 cents in 1986. The stamp features the portraits of these American Heroes.
